“Keep taking time for yourself until you’re you again.” – Lalah Delia
As a mom, I tend to easily let go of myself. As long as my kids are dressed well, fed, happy, and so much more, then I’m good. I simply tell myself that other people clearly see that I’m a mom and I’m exhausted. It’s so easy to fall into that mindset and routine.
My husband tells me I’m beautiful just the way that I am. Which I am forever grateful for that, of course. I remind him that I don’t always want to look as tired as I am. I want to dress up, wear cute clothes, and just feel good.
I would never do much with my hair other than rock a mom bun every day. Literally, every single day. My hair is super thick, was really long and just hard to upkeep, especially the color. Anyone who truly knows me, knew how I felt about my red hair. I had wanted to have bright red hair for the longest but, I could never convince myself to actually do it until September of last year.
Before my red, I would always tell myself that I could never pull that off. Why do we tell ourselves these types of things? Don’t get me wrong, I have my weekly battles with myself about being open and willing to try fun new styles and such.
I’m also the type of person that gets bored easily with my hair, because I never do anything with it. After a while, I knew I was ready for a change. No, I needed a change.
I took into consideration the fact that I never did anything with my hair, red is hard to upkeep, and my hair grows very quickly. Meaning, my natural hair color or “roots” rather, would start coming through insanely fast. I knew right then that I definitely wanted to go shorter, and closer to my natural color.
That was a huge change for me. Everyone knew me as “red” or Chels with the red hair. I was nervous but to be honest this wasn’t my first drastic hair change, and it’ll grow back.
I was ever so lucky to team up with an amazing individual, an awesome hairstylist, a super down to earth chick that I actually went to high school with named Ora. I won’t get into the high school days as much but I will say, Ora was and still is always so lovable. She will befriend anyone and has a heart of gold that loves to make others smile.
Ora has been styling hair since she was 14, starting with extensions leading up to her actually working in a salon at the age of 16. She now owns her own salon at All Dolled Up, and has an amazing crew where everyone just seems like family. The shop is setup super nice with stations for each stylist where they’ve added their own unique touches. They have a makeup station, as well as a lash station in the back. Ora has also traveled as an educator for Rusk for upcoming stylists.
In the center they have a lounging area with a TV, coffee stand, and even a few toys for smaller kids. So yeah mamas, you want to get your hair done, you’re all set. My favorite thing about All Dolled Up is the environment. A place of work that feels like home away from home to some, light music, laughter, and awesome ladies who love what they do.
During our first session, Ora tried many things to strip the red from my hair. It was a process. Hair is a process. You have to willing to be patient and sometimes go through a few sessions and/or colors to get your desired look. It was a start to something beautiful, and relaxing as I enjoyed my alone time. When you find a great stylist who you trust to honestly do anything with your hair, it’s like gold. I trust Ora, and know that she is very skilled at what she does.
The 3-4 weeks in between the first and second session went by so quickly, and I was back again and ready for the final touches. This session didn’t take as long considering my hair had already lightened up a lot. I was so excited and couldn’t wait to see the final product.
While my hair was processing I also got some lashes! Let me tell you! Ladies, if you are even thinking about getting lash extensions, do it! Game changing. [Clapping hands] I’m so serious. My actual lashes are nonexistent. So when I saw them I wanted to cry! Something as simple as some lashes boosted my confidence so much, and this was even before my hair was completely finished. Needless to say, I was on cloud nine.
Ora finishes up with my hair, and I’m obsessed. We went from a dull red, to a medium blonde/brown, to a strawberry blonde ombré. She did such an awesome job! We did a HAIR Q&A which was fun, and I will link that below which contains the before, during, & after.
Overall, we are all beautiful in our own ways. Whatever makes you happy, do it. Have an idea and want to try it? Do it! It’s your life, live to the fullest and make the best of it. You do you and be happy.
I want to say a very special thank you to Ora for her time, her willingness to work with me, and for always being super sweet. All Dolled Up is the best of the best hair salon in my hometown, and if you haven’t checked it out, you’re missing out! They are also remodeling over the next few weeks, and I’m so excited to see what they do next! The links, location, services, and prices are below. Enjoy!
